What you need to know for your driving licence:
The first step to getting your actual driving licence is to hold a provisional driving licence. It is possible to apply for a provisional license a full three months before you turn 17. In order to apply for this provisional licence, you need to fill out a D1 form which you can pick up from a local post office or complete online. Once you turn 17 years old and you hold a provisional licence, you can start your driving lessons.
To start driving, you need to be able to read a car’s number plate from just over 20 metres away. This is roughly the length of five cars. If you wear contact lenses or glasses, make sure that you wear them at all times when driving.

Theory Test
You will need to complete the theory test before you can take the practical test. Our instructors are on hand to help you pass the theory test through in-car training and you can also call our support team for advice. You can improve your chances of passing the theory test by building up practical knowledge on your lessons.
The theory test is in two parts and you need to pass both to pass the test overall:
Multiple Choice
People sitting this test will be given 57 minutes in order to answer 50 questions of a multiple choice nature. The test is carried out on a touch screen. In order to pass this test, you need to get 43 out of 50 answers correct.
Hazard Perception
You will be shown 14 videos which contain scenes that take place every day on the road. There will be a minimum of one developing hazard in each clip but a clip can have two developing hazards. The aim of this test is to react to the hazard that is developing as early on as possible and it is possible to score 5 points for every hazard. In order to pass this part of the test, you need to score a minimum of 44 from 75 points.
Practical Test
After you have passed the theory test, it is time to focus on the practical test which will demonstrate your driving skills. The examiner will want to focus on your general level of driving safety and how you perform a number of set exercises.
The first section of the test will be test your eyesight before you will receive 2 questions which relate to safety checks for your car (Show Me, Tell Me). Following this you will undertake the driving element, which should last for around 40 minutes. This section of the test will focus on general driving skills but there will also be a specific manoeuvre, which may be reverse parking, turning in the road or reversing around a corner. It may be that you are asked to undertake an emergency stop as well.
There is now an added element to your driving test in that you will drive independently for 10 minutes. The examiner will show you a diagram of the route and you will need to follow traffic signs and a series of directions. Your Steve's school of motoring instructor will practice this with you.
